3-Day Haematology Morphology Symposium

Organised by the International Council for Standardization in Haematology (ICSH) in conjunction with the University of Western Australia (UWA).

Join a global audience at this 3-day educational programme of lectures, morphology demonstrations and hands-on microscopy workshops to enhance your skills in haematology.

PROGRAMME

Organised by the International Council for Standardization in Haematology (ICSH) in conjunction with the University of Western Australia

The Symposium will include:

  • Plenary lectures

  • Morphology presentations

  • Meet-the-expert sessions

  • Abstract presentations, and

  • Morphology workshops for slide review

 

The Morphology will have sessions on:

  • Red blood cells

  • Lymphoid, and

  • Myeloid disorders

 

There will be presentations using state-of-the-art facilities at UWA. 

 

The draft programme is below as an overview, is subject to change, and will be finalised 6 weeks prior to the Symposium.

Speakers for the Plenary lectures include:

There will be a Symposium Dinner for all delegates on Monday 24th November at the University Club, University of Western Australia.  The price for this sit-down 3-course dinner is included in the registration fee.

CONFIRMED FACULTY

Professor Wendy Erber

Professor Wendy Erber is a Consultant Haematologist at PathWest in Perth, Professor of Pathology and Laboratory Medicine, University of Western Australia and Chair of the Board of the ICSH. She is a passionate teacher and for many years has taught haematology trainees in Hematology Short Courses (in Cambridge and Perth) and delivers weekly morphology sessions to local trainees.

 

Dr Ben Hedley

Dr Ben Hedley is a Clinical laboratory scientist in a large tertiary health centre in Ontario, Canada where he oversees the hematology, coagulation and flow cytometry laboratories. He is a member of the College of American Pathologists Diagnostic Immunology and Flow Cytometry Committee, actively involved with the Clinical and Laboratory Standards Institute and on the Board of the International Council on Standardization of Hematology. His interests are in furthering standardization of laboratory testing to elevate knowledge and testing proficiency for all and the development of relevant artificial intelligence software. 

 

Dr Katharine Lowndes

Dr Katharine Lowndes is a Consultant Haematologist in Hampshire, United Kingdom where she practices clinical haematology and is clinical lead for the haematology laboratory. She has an interest in trainee education and is a volunteer with “Health Volunteers Overseas”. This has taken her to Tanzania, Zambia and Cambodia where she teaches haematological laboratory techniques and morphology.

Professor Anna Schuh

Professor Anna Schuh (University of Oxford) is an internationally-renowned clinician-scientist haematologist with vast expertise in the biology and treatment of chronic lymphoid malignancies and molecular genetics. She led the Oxford haematology laboratories including establishing a state-of-the-art molecular diagnostics service for patients with blood diseases or cancer. Professor Schuh also holds a Faculty position at the Muhimbili University of Health and Allied Sciences in Dar es salaam, Tanzania where she contributes to haematology teaching and supervision of research students. She also founded Serenox, a social enterprise to improve access to DNA-based diagnostics in sub-Saharan Africa.

 

Dr Matthew Wright

Dr Matthew Wright is a Consultant Haematologist in Perth, Western Australia. He practices clinical haematology at Fiona Stanley Hospital where is also Head of Laboratory Haematology at PathWest. He is a Clinical Senior Lecturer at the University of Western Australia. Matt loves teaching laboratory haematology, and for more than 10 years has run a Laboratory Haematology Short Course for new haematology trainees. He is passionate about using structured teaching of the skills of haematological morphology. He has utilised this approach during outreach teaching in Australia and Indonesia and for online teaching (Coursera).

Dr Razan Zulkeflee

Dr Razan Zulkeflee is an early-career Haematologist working in Malaysia. She is a lifetime member of the Malaysian Laboratory Haematology Society. In 2024 Dr Zulkeflee was awarded the ICSH “Sam Machin Scholarship” in 2024 for her studies on iron deficiency in pregnancy. She is Associate Editor of the Journal of Medical Case Reports. She is passionate about haematology education.

ABSTRACT SUBMISSIONS

Abstracts are welcome, and limited to 1 per person.

 

Please note that you must be registered for the Symposium before submitting an Abstract.

They may be Case presentations or a series of clinical cases with interesting or unusual morphology.

 

Abstracts are to be structured as follows:

  • Abstract title

  • Author/s

  • Work address

  • Email address

 

Abstract (300 words maximum) to include: 

  • Introduction / background 

  • Clinical case details or details of a series of cases 

  • Morphological findings 

  • Results of any ancillary tests performed 

  • Diagnosis and any management / outcomes

  • Discussion of interesting features

In November the average daytime temperature is 24 - 26 degrees C.

Dress

 

Smart casual is appropriate for the Symposium. The venue is air conditioned and may feel cold, so we recommend you bring a sweater or light jacket. Comfortable shoes are recommended if you are planning to walk from your accommodation to the Symposium (20 minutes from St George’s College, for example) to the Symposium venue.

Electricity

Australia uses 240 volts.

The Symposium will be in English only.

Transperth Bus 950 runs frequently from Perth CBD, via Elizabeth Quay Bus
Station to the Queen Elizabeth II Medical Centre.

 

Nearest bus stops are on Monash Avenue outside the J Robin Warren Library and on Hospital Avenue opposite the Oral Health Centre and Perth Children’s Hospital.

VISAs

With the exception of New Zealand citizens travelling on New Zealand passports, all foreign nationals must obtain a visa/ETA before travelling to Australia. New Zealand citizens are issued with a visa on arrival in Australia. 

Applying for a Visa

 

Visa application forms are available on the Australian Government Department Department of Home Affairs website and many applications can be lodged online.  Details about how to apply are included in the information about the particular visa you wish to apply for.

The Haematology Morphology Symposium 2025 has been registered with the International Event Coordinator Network (IECN) of the Department of Home Affairs.  Registrants from overseas will require a Visa to enter Australia.

 

Participants, attendees and speakers may be eligible to apply for the following visa options:  

Electronic Travel Authority – ETA (subclass 601)

All ETA-eligible passport holders must apply for an ETA using the Australian ETA app.

European passport holders may be eligible for an eVisitor (subclass 651)

 

As a business visitor, you can:

  • make general business or employment enquiries

  • investigate, negotiate, enter into or review a business contract

  • conduct activities as part of an official government visit

  • take part in a conference, trade fair or seminar. The organisers can’t pay you to take part.

 

You can’t:

  • work for or provide services to a business or organisation based in Australia

  • sell goods or services directly to the public

  • include family members in your application. Each family member, including those listed on your passport, must submit a separate application

 

eVisitor (subclass 651) Business stream visa

Timing

The visa application process can take up to eight months or more, so the ICSH encourages attendees to apply for visas as early as possible, but no later than 3 months before planning to enter Australia. 

 

Please note that the ICSH will be required to provide the Government of Australia with details of all international registrants.  As such, the ICSH will need to ask for your passport details. 

 

Letter of Invitation

Once you have registered and paid, the ICSH will be able to provide a letter stating your intent to attend the Symposium. This may assist you in obtaining your travel visa.

Accommodation Options:

St Georges College, UWA

Rooms have been reserved at St George’s College which is located 10-minutes’ walk from the Symposium venue. 

 

Rooms are available for 4 nights from Sunday 23rd - Thursday 27th November.

 

Check in will only be between 3pm and 5pm on Sunday 23rd November.

 

St George’s College is a non-smoking venue.
